Omiš is one of those Croatian coastal towns where the setting really does most of the talking. Tucked between the mountains and the Adriatic, the town sits at the mouth of the Cetina River, surrounded by the dramatic cliffs of the Cetina Canyon. It’s also a place with quite a history, once being home to pirates who used the town’s position and surrounding landscape to their advantage.
Omiš was our nearest town while we stayed in the small village of Naklice, so we visited most mornings for fresh bakery breakfasts and a slow mooch along the harbour. There is a small market that sells fresh fruit and fish daily, and the streets are lined with tourist-style shops selling the typical tourist souvenirs that you expect to see.
There is a main high street with lots of small alleyways leading off it, which are great to explore. You can also visit two fortresses in Omiš – the one in the main town being Mirabela Fortress (Peovica). A short 10-minute walk will get you to the top.
It’s an absolute tourist hotspot and by 10am, the streets are filled with holidaymakers and locals alike, all ready for a day soaking up the sun on the beach or heading off on a boat trip, white-water rafting, or a gentle cruise along the Cetina River, taking in the sights of the magnificent Cetina Canyon.
For us, it wasn’t somewhere we chose to spend our days as it felt far too busy, but we did really enjoy a slow wander around in the morning before the crowds arrived. It was lovely to see the town waking up, grab some breakfast and take in the harbour before the heat and crowds took over.
