Frankfurt is one of Germany’s most important cities, known for its impressive skyline, international business district and position on the River Main. But beyond the modern towers, there is another side to Frankfurt, one of historic squares, traditional buildings and lively streets that gives the city a character all of its own.
We explored the city on foot, taking in the contrast between the modern and the old. The Römer and its surrounding square were a highlight, with their colourful façades and unmistakably German character, while just a short walk away the skyscrapers reminded us that this is very much a modern European city too.
Frankfurt is a city of contrasts. Old and new, traditional and cosmopolitan, grand architecture alongside bustling streets and riverside views.
It may be best known as a financial centre, but spend a little time exploring and there is much more to discover. For me, it was the unexpected mix of history, architecture and atmosphere that made Frankfurt worth stopping for.
